Projek LCS: Anwar sekat AG charge Zahid

“Bossku Effect” Could Lift PN’s Hope On Its Very Own “Abah Wave”

Murray Hunter

Anwar Ibrahim is now prime minister. After GE15, he was guided into a ‘unity government’, which he put together with a hotchpotch of political parties. Adversaries became friends and learnt how to work with each other.

We observed the first 100 days and examined the budget looking for hints of what this government stands for. The answers haven’t come. Most see just a steady continuation of government, similar to governments before.

However, six states are facing their own elections in a few months, and will the arrest and charging of Muhyiddin play any role?

Polarized and divisive nation

The Muhyiddin arrest and charging has occurred in front of a much bigger backdrop than the issue of corruption. There is the issue of a politically divided nation, where the arrest and charging of Muhyiddin can be seen as one side persecuting the other side.

What we are seeing is a totally divided nation. At one side is the Malay-Islam-centric Perikatan Nasional (PN), which practices division and racist scorn. At the other side, is a centralist unity government, that respect Malay cultural roots, the multiculturalism of the nation, wrapped in Islam as the religion of the nation.

To supplement the two dominant political forces of the peninsula are the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), the dominant political force in Sarawak, and Sabah based parties blending into a unity government.

There are two distinct visions for Malaysia. If PN had been the government, there is no doubt there would have been Malay-centric government, pushing towards a quasi-Islamic state. This is an acceptable vision of Malaysia to many within the Malay-heartlands (not all). This is in contrast to Anwar’s unity government, which is seeking to cast some form of middle road, something not fully Islamic, but not quite secular.

The challenge to the unity government and the middle road

The coming six state elections will involve more than 40 percent of the nation’s voters. It’s a good litmus test of what peninsula voters want for Malaysia. However, the reality is the PN, principally made up of Bersatu and PAS, will ride over UMNO and PKR across the six states. If voting follows the trends of GE15, UMNO will be almost wiped out, while PKR will lose a large number of seats.

There is no way Anwar’s unity parties will make any inroads in Kelantan and Terengganu. Anwar’s coalition will also go backwards in Kedah, leaving a much stronger PN state government there.

There will be a big battle in Negri Sembilan, with the odds running in PN’s favour. Selangor will be a very intense battle, where PN believe they can take power, and deep down the Pakatan Harapan leadership know they have a real fight on their hands.

Even the state of Penang will face massive losses along the mainland seats, which will leave a PH government in power with a greatly reduced majority.

There is indeed the realization that the unity government’s pride and sense of legitimacy will be damaged at the coming state elections. How deep the wound is, will depend upon how much the unity parties are decimated. Winning Penang, Selangor, and Negri Sembilan would be considered a good victory. The loss of Negri Sembilan would dint the pride of the unity parties. The loss of Selangor would dig deep into the Anwar administration’s sense of legitimacy.

UMNO and PKR are vulnerable and have most to lose. This is why the arrest and charging of Muhyiddin cant escape being political.

The gameplan we can see

Anwar has said on many occasions his government has zero-tolerance for corruption. That maybe the case, but there are side benefits to this policy, either by accident or design. Investigations, arrests, and charges have so far taken out the Bersatu kingpins. Rumours in the media suggest that some leaders in PAS may soon be called in for investigations over election fraud. We see the MACC working hard on these cases.

The PN camp is crying foul and claiming selective prosecution and political persecution.

The intuitive thinking is that when Muhyiddin faces the crowds during the coming election campaign, he will suffer a major credibility deficit, due to the criminal charges hanging over him. If more are charged before the elections, then the effect would be greater, and discredit the whole PN coalition.

]]> Malaysia’s civil space still ‘obstructed’ for sixth year amid suppression of dissent, satire, protest https://www.malaysia-today.net/2023/03/16/malaysias-civil-space-still-obstructed-for-sixth-year-amid-suppression-of-dissent-satire-protest/ Thu, 16 Mar 2023 06:44:31 +0000 https://www.malaysia-today.net/?p=227134

Malaysia’s civic space was rated as “obstructed” for the sixth consecutive year, amid continued suppression of dissenting voices and satire as well as restrictions on protests in 2022, an international report released today has found.

MMO) – In the “People Power Under Attack 2022” report by global research collaboration CIVICUS Monitor, which tracks fundamental freedoms in 197 countries and territories, Malaysia is one of seven countries in the Asia region rated as having an “obstructed” civic space.

The “obstructed” category is the middle grade for how well a country respects the freedom of speech, freedom of peaceful assembly and freedom of association. The full range of ratings is from open, narrowed, obstructed, repressed or closed.

The other regional nations falling in the “obstructed” category are Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Maldives, Timor-Leste, and Nepal.

Malaysia has been in the “obstructed” category since CIVICUS Monitor started releasing its annual report in 2017.

Why is Malaysia’s civic space ‘obstructed’?

Commenting on Malaysia’s “obstructed” rating, CIVICUS Monitor said it had documented the continued use of restrictive laws to silence dissent in the country, as well as restrictions on protests and harassment of peaceful protesters.

In a statement, CIVICUS Monitor listed the attempts to silence critical voices online last year as including the Communications and Multimedia Act’s (CMA) Section 233, under which graphic designer Fahmi Reza was charged twice last February for two satirical posters — caricaturing a former health minister on the shortened Covid-19 quarantine period for ministers and the Ministry of Trade and Industry’s order which allowed alcohol factories to continue operating during the Covid-19 lockdown.

It also noted Section 233 — which it said was broad and vague and inconsistent with international law and students — was used for Fahmi’s last April arrest over another satirical artwork depicting what appeared to be an ape in a monarch’s clothing.

(MMO) -The Education Ministry said it does not have any plans now to recognise the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) taken by students at Chinese independent high schools, and said a task force that was studying the matter never submitted its report to the government.

The ministry said this in a written parliamentary reply yesterday to Merbok MP Mohd Nazri Abu Hassan, who had asked what was the outcome of the task force’s report on recognition for the UEC and if the government will provide recognition to the UEC.

“For Yang Berhormat’s information, until now, the MoE does not have any plans yet to recognise the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) which is implemented in Chinese private high schools. This stand is based on the National Education Policy and the provisions of the Education Act 1996 (Act 550),” the ministry said in the reply.

In the same reply, the ministry said: “The Ministry of Education did not receive any report from the UEC policy task force (PPDUEC).”

It noted that the PPDUEC was supposed to present the report on its findings to the Education Ministry within three to six months from November 29, 2018, with the period for the task force’s study extended six times until February 29, 2020.

“However, up to the final date, PPDUEC still did not submit the report of its findings. Since the period for the study was not extended and had ended, therefore the membership of the PPDUEC also ended automatically on the same date,” the ministry said.

In January, Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim announced that all mosques and suraus in Johor are prohibited from being used for political speeches.

(FMT) – Johor’s Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar has instructed mosque and surau officials to ensure that speakers who deliver talks there are accredited by the state’s religious authorities.

According to Bernama, Sultan Ibrahim said committee members who allow unaccredited speakers to deliver talks in their mosques or suraus will be dismissed.

In January, Johor crown prince Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim announced that all mosques and suraus in Johor were prohibited from being used for political speeches.

Tunku Ismail, who is the Johor Islamic Religious Council chairman, also forbade any individual or politician from using mosques and suraus to discuss political issues.

Earlier this month, the Terengganu Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council (Maidam) announced a ban on MPs, assemblymen and senators from delivering lectures in mosques and suraus.

It said Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin was upset that some politicians had given religious lectures or classes, and led Friday prayers without the council’s approval.

Other political leaders are also not allowed to speak in mosques and suraus there unless they are accredited by Maidam.

Subsequently, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang said it was not an offence for politicians to give religious lectures in mosques and suras, and that leaders were obliged to speak about political Islam.

]]> No short shorts please, we’re Malaysian https://www.malaysia-today.net/2023/03/16/no-short-shorts-please-were-malaysian/ Thu, 16 Mar 2023 06:39:06 +0000 https://www.malaysia-today.net/?p=227126

Instead of looking at its role in being repeatedly complicit in these transgressions, our sterling civil service and the “little Napoleons” who run the service, are more interested in monitoring how short my short-pants are.

Shankar R. Santhiram, Free Malaysia Today

“No shorts in case of an accident while driving”. I had to remind myself of this while on my weekly drive from Kuala Lumpur to Penang, last Sunday.

I mean in the unlikely event we get into a mishap along the way, which then requires us to show up at a police station, I didn’t want to be turned away. Turned away like some Malaysians have been recently, on account of not adhering to the strict moral code of dressing that the civil service is adamant in upholding.

I was stern with my Austrian wife, too. I took a tape measure to the dress she was wearing before we left at 6.45am on the day. For her, it looked decent enough. It was with sleeves, albeit not till her elbow, and almost touched her knees.

But I put my foot down.

There was no way I was allowing her in the car if her dress did not cross her knees by at least 10mm. The dress failed, and eventually, we left at 7.30am, after a deep dive explanation about the dressing rules and regulations in our country.

My Austrian wife, although she has lived in Malaysia for almost 25 years, was extremely confused.

What new laws are these, she asked.

My wife argued that I was speaking nonsense by reminding me that in 2015, the then Minister in the PM’s Department in charge of law, who is currently also a minister in the PM’s Department, but now additionally in charge of institutional reform as well as “the law” had said that there is no dress code for the public when dealing with government departments and agencies.

It was way too early in the morning for me to start a debate with my wife about the complexities, vagaries, and strange inner workings of the government of Malaysia.

So, I brushed her comments aside with some flippant reply about being dressed up decently when we drove to Penang. And, how it was important that when we arrived there, she looked the part of a serious veterinarian.

She then looked at me in the most perplexing and accusatory manner. You know, in that disbelieving way. The way some wives look at their husbands when they think their man has lost his marbles. This was that very same look.

I slinked away quietly, and hoped that my insistence in being a “morally upright” Malaysian, at least when it comes to dressing in accordance with the prescribed way, by no less the all-powerful and omnipresent civil service, would quell my wife’s annoyance with my stance.

I think it was too early for her to pick a fight with me that morning, so I got away with it.

She went back in and came out after a long 20 minutes, donning a pair of jeans and a fully-sleeved top half ensemble. Nothing more was discussed that morning, about the choice of her outfit. But, suffice to say, it was a terribly frosty three-and-a-half-hour drive to Penang, last Sunday.

Only in blessed Malaysia can these types of moral quandaries exist.

This is the land where one former prime minister is already languishing in jail, because he was found guilty by the apex court that he fiddled with the national coffers, while all the time, claiming to be “morally upright”.

And now, another former prime minister has been charged with more corruption and abuse of power, albeit while insisting with full “moral” authority that he is a victim of political persecution.

But Malaysia has phenomenal “moral policing”.

You will not be able to enter a government building, where public servants work, with shorts that are too short. This is just in case the diligent, highly competent, and deeply motivated civil servants there get mesmerised by your physique and get distracted, or type the wrong keys on their keyboards, or turn a blind-eye to misdemeanour you might commit.

If a civil servant glimpses at your “aurat” or an approximation of your private parts, there is a serious chance of them not being able to do their jobs with the utmost sincerity and conscientiousness.

It is perplexing that I’ve not seen Najib Razak, or Muhyddin Yassin, our erstwhile prime ministers wearing really revealing and provocative shorts in public, showing off their physique.

I mean if they did, at least it would explain why Najib got away with all the misappropriation of funds, right under the noses of the very civil servants, whose only job is to be our custodians.

Malfeasance and corruption are no longer just an allegation. It has been proven, while more allegations have surfaced, with yet another prime minister.

But, instead of looking at its role in being repeatedly complicit in these transgressions, our sterling civil service and the “little Napoleons” who run the service, are more interested in monitoring how short my short-pants are.

There I was thinking that the “tie-less, slipper-wearing Anwar Ibrahim age” had arrived, where your dressing-up or dressing-down will not matter. And instead, you would be respected for your mind, your ability, your integrity, and your compassion.

But alas, we cannot expect Anwar to fight every battle for us. Sometimes, we must fight our battles. So next week, when we drive up to Penang, I am asking my wife to wear whatever she wants.

If, God-forbid, we have a problem along the way, and the civil service does not help us because of my short shorts, or her dressing, then I know that Malaysia is truly a joke!
